St Stephen’s Church

Until 1911, a lookout and hearth watch lived in a specially furnished dwelling in the tower, excessive above the rooftops of the city; at some stage, triplets had been born there. Today, St. Stephen’s presents itself as a corridor church with a standard structure of a nave and two facet aisles whose Gothic vaults haven’t but been restored. The partitions are finished in white, creating a beautiful contrast to the red sandstone of the supporting building elements. The backside a part of the spacious steeple up to the pointed arch frieze dates in all probability again to Willigis’s church. The dome and lantern have been put in place for the town’s 2000th anniversary in 1962.

St. Stephen’s is the only German church for which the Jewish artist Marc Chagall ( ) created home windows. Born in Russia, the artists spent the longest interval of his life in France. Blue mild shines through the stained glass into the interior of St. Stephen’s, and never only angels however other Biblical figures transfer apparently ethereally on this light. Today, the house of God presents itself as a clearly organized hall church with a nave and two side aisles by which the Gothic vaults haven’t but been restored. The walls are finished in white with the purple sandstone of the supporting architectural elements forming an attractive contrast.
