Chinese scientists create human ears with 3D printer
The reconstruction was done in patients suffering from microtia – a congenital deformity in which the ear is not developed until the first months of gestation. It affects hearing, but it can also lead to other physiological and psychological problems.
All five patients were between six and nine years of age. For the reconstruction of the organ, the scientists scanned the ears and transferred the data to a 3D printer, creating a new mold.
The cartilage of the organ was developed in vitro, that is, outside the living organism. For this, chondrocytes – cells present in the cartilaginous tissue – were placed in a biodegradable carrier and developed in a test tube.
Also, cartilage was used for atrial reconstruction of patients and achieved satisfactory results throughout the maturation of the tissue, which took approximately two years and five months.
According to the journal “EBio Medicine”, the microtia reaches 1 in 5 thousand people worldwide. But in Latin American and Asian countries, this rate increases.
As the human body has several reactions to the process, the surgery can not yet be done for aesthetic purposes.
