Huawei Honor Magic 2’s Review

Design

The predecessor, Honor Magic, was a triumph of design. Both a blue and a red version were made, with beautiful gradients that change color, along with a more traditional black model. Honor says the back of the phone has a smooth curve, much like the original phone, and a special nano coating enables color transitions. It is interesting that the back of Magic 2 looks almost exactly like the Huawei P20 Pro, complete with three camera lenses.

The big highlight of Magic 2 is a pop-up camera, reminiscent of Oppo Find X and Xiaomi Mi Mix 3. It’s not clear which company came to this project first, although Oppo is the first to have its sale version. Unlike Find X, Honor Magic 2 will only show the front camera when it comes out of the frame. Using five different tracks, the butterfly mechanism manually “clicks” in place to show the camera lens, and makes missing a notch is possible. The 6.39-inch AMOLED screen with a resolution of 2340 x 1080 pixels is typical of today’s flagship phones

Display

Now that’s a good thing, as AMOLED means deep blacks, ample brightness and popping colors. In the settings you can dial if you prefer, but you probably will not need it.. Having no notch makes for an expansive view. The screen-to-screen ratio of the device is very peculiar compared to other phones. There is no fingerprint scanner visible, thanks to the integration of one on the screen.

And there are some problems with the slider: pull it out of the pocket and it can open automatically; Magic 2 opts for a speaker at the top of the panel, which sounds kind of weird when it picks up the light; the division between the two parts of the panel is not totally perfect when closed; no case can be four-sided (Honor is making one but does not have it on hand at launch event). And how well that mechanism will work after prolonged use and things like dust in.

Cameras

There are six lenses in total. The front camera set consists of a 16-megapixel main sensor and then two 2-megapixel sensors, while the rear camera has a 16-megapixel RGB sensor, a 16-megapixel wide-angle lens and a monochrome 24 megapixels. The rear camera uses artificial intelligence for scene recognition and includes the artificial image stabilization technology (AIS) we’ve seen on Huawei phones, including the P20 Pro.

The front camera also uses AI for enhanced portraits as well as portrait lighting effects. The camera set also adds 3D and infrared depth sensing sensors for a secure face-unlock feature, even in low light. This is not the only security feature, as Honor Magic 2 also has an on-screen fingerprint sensor, which Honor claims to be a large 30mm detection area, making it easy to unlock the phone with one touch.

Battery

Considering the price, 3400mAh is reasonable. But it falls well short of Mate 20 Pro, flagship of the same manufacturer, which has a battery with 4200mAh. It is the price of having a sliding phone without notch. If this shrinks a bit quickly from time to time, the inclusion of 40W of fast loading (again, the same as the Mate 20 Pro) is super fast for refills. In fact, this is only surpassed by the Super VOOC charging (50W) found in the Lamborghini Oppo Find X (the standard model is 40W which is brilliantly fast).

Software

The operating system is the new and great Android 9.0 Pie, along with the EMUI manufacturer interface. As Magic 2 is intended only for China, and has the own virtual assistant of Honor called Yoyo on board, can run a unique version made especially for the phone. Honor is not spreading much about what Yoyo does, saying he is a “butler”, and is also somehow connected to the slider mechanism. The first Magic Honor impressed us at CES 2017 with its incredible range of AI-based skills, including intelligent facial recognition and recommendations based on its use.

Conclusion

That said, the “notch problem” is probably just a temporary problem. It will not take long for the cameras and on-screen sensors to begin to develop and change the need for moving parts – manual or mechanical – to eradicate some of the slippage process deficiencies, such as potential malfunctions, splash protection, dust, among others. With that in mind, Magic 2 is Honor showing that it is at the forefront – no matter if those designs are relegated next year, that will have left its mark. The sliding phone is a smart way to correct the “notch problem” and get the most out of the close-to-face relationship.

The appliance corresponds well to its price level. Great performance, advanced features like on-screen fingerprint scanner, and solid cameras at an affordable price. For your Chinese audience, there is also Yoyo, Honor’s voice assistant, who will add another layer of potential attraction (but that we do not address here due to its current irrelevance – until it begins to be distributed in several languages besides its Chinese trio).
