Oneplus 6T’s Review

Design

The 6T follows the same design line inaugurated by his predecessor, the OnePlus 6. The screen was a little bigger and the back is a curved glass 3D glass strip that sits comfortably against the palm of your hand. The two release colors, Midnight Black and Mirror Black, feature two distinctly different finishes. The company signature physical alerts alternator is an appreciated inclusion that allows you to switch between silence, priority and high, as well as allowing you to check in which state your phone is without waking the device. There is USB-C in the base, as the company already offers for some time. For the first time, it was decided to suspend the standard 3.5mm headphone jack. This may be a trend in the market but it will certainly displease a part of the public. Fortunately, unlike the unpacking experience of the iPhone XS, you’ll find a headset adapter in the box that, of course, is colored with the white signature of the brand.

Screen

At 6.41 inches is the largest screen for a OnePlus model. Certainly made for media lovers, mobile photographers, and gamers. Extended Full HD resolution renders everything with perfect sharpness, but the colors really suffer distortions at the most unusual angles. Like its predecessor, the 6T supports the DCI-P3’s full-color gamut and the company offers options for a variety of other color spaces as well, such as sRGB, as well as a monochrome and night reading mode feature. It also has AMOLED panel, ensuring great contrast and deep blacks, great for watching a video. There is still a lack of support for HDR on a OnePlus device, perhaps with some relation to the brightness output of the monitors used by the company. Visibility is reasonable in bright environments, and adaptive brightness is poor. Waiting for OnePlus a software update to fix this. The OnePlus 6 was our first taste of a carved canvas with the 6T, the notch is less intrusive and a lot more aesthetically pleasing. Like the Oppo F9 or the “drop of dew” notch found on the Huawei Mate 20, the top panel of the phone features a small rounded compartment that hides its front camera and 16-megapixel headphone jack. The 6T supports facial unlocking but this is done exclusively with this unique RGB camera and therefore is much less safe than the IR point projection method used by people like Apple’s Facial ID. The handset is another current model that comes with a fingerprint sensor on the screen, which as in competing models does not work perfectly. The solution mounted on the back of the previous phone was undoubtedly faster but added stitching to the design and it seems that OnePlus considered this a problem, or at least old-fashioned. The new hidden optical sensor is definitely a less reliable touch than its predecessor, but it’s really cool to use. Now you can customize the animation that comes with the unlock process. OnePlus also alluded to the implementation of a special shortcut menu, accessed by keeping your thumb on the screen while you unlock the 6T – a feature to be implemented, probably soon.

Performance

No matter what you’re doing with your phone, OnePlus 6T is more than powerful. In particular for gaming, OnePlus has increased performance with its dedicated gaming mode. It’s similar to experiences with rival smartphones, allowing you to not only manage call and notification behavior, but also limit the use of other networked applications and optimize CPU, GPU, and memory performance every time you start a game. You could deactivate the feature if you wanted and you would have detailed control over how it behaves, but for the most part, it’s best to let it do this. Another ignore and forget feature adjacent to the game mode is the new OnePlus Smart Boost functionality. Buried in the phone settings menu (under “OnePlus Lab”) and enabled by default, Smart Boost analyzes your usage and proactively relocates memory resources to help keep your phone faster. It’s hard to test how it is without having a feature like this turned on without testing it in a matter of months, but I’m glad to know it’s done. As for call quality, the headset is a touch on the metal side that may be in the highest position on the front panel of the phone, but it is fully usable and the suppression of background noise is really good.

Software

OnePlus 6T runs an enhanced version of the same Android 9.0 Pie experience with OnePlus OxygenOS overlay at the top. You can take advantage of native Android Pie features, such as the new navigation buttons used by Pixel 3, as well as features specific to OxygenOS, such as parallel applications and shortcut gestures. There are some old but significant adjustments as part of OxygenOS that make a phone as big as the 6T much more enjoyable and easy to use. You can customize quick launch actions – enabled by drawing various shapes on the lock screen – allowing you to jump to the camera, play media or turn on the flashlight. You can also slide down anywhere on the home screen to call notifications – making use with one hand much more accessible. The basic software experience looks pretty much the same as Android Pie on OnePlus 6, which is not bad. The shelf – a slider to the left of your default home screen – is one of the best ways to handle widgets and quick actions I’ve seen on Android, Hidden Space is an easy way to hide apps from prying eyes without making it too complicated to get back to them and the rich search functionality of the application tray works like a charm. There is perhaps a better use of the fingerprint sensor, for example, using shortcuts to applications and key features of the device, which for now is only a promise for the next updates.

Camera

The hardware of the 6T camera seems to be identical to that of its predecessor, with the main dual 16/20 megapixel camera, swaying a relatively large f / 1.7 aperture and PDAF (auto-phase detection) along with OIS stabilization) and expanded 1.22 μm pixels on the main 16-megapixel sensor. There is also a 16-megapixel front that takes advantage of the EIS (Electronic Image Stabilization). But what’s new? OnePlus focused on improving the HDR and low-light capture capabilities of the new snappers on its devices and added some extra settings to play. A good addition is Auto Nightscape Detection, which automates the phone’s advanced low-light mode when it detects that ambient light is difficult to find. As for the video, you can get a resolution of up to 4KF at 60 fps (limited to five minutes when using these settings) the result is not good compared to other market top-of-the-line devices. Weak audio and relatively poor image stability also disappoint. These negative points are compensated by the pleasant recording and this phone has the exclusive feature of slow-motion recording option up to 480fps (at 720p).

Battery

The 3700mAh battery of the OnePlus 6T is great but is less than the 4000mAh of the Huawei P20 Pro and even more compared to the 4200mAh of the Mate 20 Pro. It has good conditions to deal with a day and a half of frequent use and for many it will extend for two days between loads without much difficulty. The Fast Charge battery (formerly called the Dash Charge) is a great reason to buy a OnePlus. It has been the best fast charging pattern out there for a while (although this is starting to change) and the company distilled the premise with simple elegance in the slogan, “Power of a day in half an hour.” And it’s not really just advertising according to tests. What I would say is that with the combination of OnePlus’s 20W charging technology and a battery the size of the 6T’s – the company’s promise has reached its limit.

Conclusion

While not at all shocking, the 6T brings new technologies and improvements as expected from the new OnePlus model. But the camera could be somewhat better compared to the direct competitors. The suspension of the 3.5mm headphone jack is still somewhat inadequate. To complete, the device does not have certification of resistance to water
